Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speaking event organizer. Feminist Frequency is a web site that hosts videos and commentaries on the representation of gender roles in pop media and popular. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit site for education that investigates gender representation in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also is a vocal advocate for issues relating to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of individuals in the internet space. With a master's in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became fascinated by the issue of gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. The ambitious lady planned to launch a web series examining the gender roles in video games. She found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. But the harassment did not discourage her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a feminist journalist. Her many notable contributions in the feminist field were recognized by a variety of awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit focused on the portrayal of women in popular cultural and the narratives that surround them.
